CIOT outlines three strategies for improving UK tax system

The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) has outlined three ‘strategic priorities’ designed to help the new Prime Minister improve the UK tax system.

In letters addressed to Conservative Party leadership candidates Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, the CIOT stated: ‘Given the pressing public interest in a better working tax system, the CIOT has identified three linked priorities which we think are widely supported and the new Prime Minister must act upon.’

The Institute has called for the new Prime Minister to prioritise investment in HMRC to improve performance; review Making Tax Digital (MTD); and undertake a ‘more ambitious’ tax simplification programme.

According to the CIOT, the tax system has become ‘far too complicated for taxpayers to understand and comply with’. It stated that the new Prime Minister should resist the temptation to make structural changes to the UK tax system until the simplification process has been finalised.

The CIOT’s priorities can be read in full here.
