HMRC has reinstated its self-assessment helpline as of Monday 4th September, after a three-month closure.

The temporary closure was put in place on 12 June to give HMRC time to deal with more urgent phone enquiries by reallocating staff to other departments as the helpline generally receives fewer calls over the summer.

Taxpayers were encouraged to use HMRC’s online digital services for any queries over this time instead.

According to HMRC’s performance figures, the self-assessment helpline typically receives around 5 million calls each year. This was the first time it has completely shut down this service for a significant period of time.

What does the self-assessment helpline assist with?

You can call HMRC’s self-assessment helpline on 0300 200 3310 for help if you:

  • have problems submitting your tax return online
  • have lost your online service user name or password
  • have misplaced your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference Number (UTR)
  • are receiving an error messages in your online account or on HMRC forms

Before you call

Make sure you have your National Insurance number ready as well as your Self Assessment Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR number) if you have it.

The deadline to file tax returns for the 2022/23 tax year is 31 January 2024, but there are many benefits of getting your tax return submitted early which we outline in more detail here.
